Hippocrates, 460 BC – 370 BC

Honey and other ingredients closely related with it, have been studied for their beneficial properties against diseases related to the respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and nervous systems among others. It is one of the most important natural products in the world. A product of immense nutritional and biological value, with recognized therapeutic properties which has been utilized for thousands of years. Specifically, Hippocrates recommended honey for treating coughs and sore throats, eye conditions, and local antisepsis.

Honey is known for its multiple therapeutic properties such as antimicrobial, antiseptic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. The benefits of honey are based on its high content of natural antioxidants and soothing agents, which contribute to enhancing health. Indeed, in a guideline issued by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) of the United Kingdom in August 2018, aiming at fighting antibiotic misuse, it specifically stated that “… Evidence showed that honey could be effective in reducing symptoms of acute cough caused by upper respiratory tract infections…”. This directive was mainly addressed to adults and children over the age of 5.

Propolis is nature’s antibiotic and one of its best-kept secrets. Its beneficial properties have been recognized since ancient times, with many references mentioning the use of this particular substance to treat infections and wounds. It is known for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. These properties make it ideal for products that promote the treatment of inflammations.
