Honey

Honey, as well as other ingredients dierctly associated with bees such as propolis, royal jelly, etc. have been studied for their beneficial properties against diseases related to the respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and nervous systems among others. It is one of the most important natural products in the world, with immense nutritional and biological value, while its therapeutic properties have been recognized and utilized for thousands of years. Specifically, Hippocrates recommended honey for treating coughs and sore throats, eye conditions, as well as for local antiseptic purposes.
Honey is known for its many therapeutic properties such as antimicrobial, antiseptic, and antioxidant, as well as its anti-inflammatory action. The multiple benefits of honey are based on its high content of natural antioxidants and soothing agents, which contribute to enhancing health. The antimicrobial properties of honey and its use in addressing respiratory infections in adults and children (over 1 year old) have been studied, confirmed, and proven. In fact, in a directive issued by the “National Institute for Health and Care Excellence” of Great Britain in August of 2018, aiming at fighting antibiotic misuse, it specifically states that “Evidence showed that honey could be effective in reducing symptoms of acute cough due to upper respiratory tract infections…”. This directive was mainly addressed to adults and children over the age of 5.
